Highly Effective Ways to Argue Theism #106 :The "I've Written on this Topic Elsewhere" Argument

I will now present a completely undeniable argument that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that God exits.

I’ve written exhaustively on this very topic elsewhere.

Therefore, God exists

Sal:

I'm partial to an argument for the existence of God that Peter Kreeft provides:

Beauty exists in the world.
Therefore, God necessarily exists.
(You either see the immensity of the point of the argument or you don't. It's a spin-off from St. Thomas' argument, but it works...)

My own further point on the existence of God: kind of funny, don't you think, that God -- who is existence itself and gives rise to the existence of everything else -- is subject to "proofs" or "demonstrations" or whatever? I mean, the very thing, the I AM, who gives rise to humans who then in turn try to formulate arguments about the existence of the existence-giver seems like a monumental turning upside down of the causal chain: the existent that was caused (writ large) by EXISTENCE = ESSENCE then trying to prove the "existence" of EXISTENCE... it's kind of like a written sentence trying to argue for or against the idea that animated the formulation of that sentence in the first place... kinda makes lying in a field of soft grass on warm summer day and contemplating one's navel see a rather attractive proposition...

either Im misunderstanding your added point, anonymous, or we disagree on the validity of natural theology. I would argue this point with you here, but I've written extensively on it elsewhere. Trust me, it was compelling!

I disagree with both of you entirely.

I've written on all of the topics that you bring up elsewhere.

Therefore, I am right.

The very phrase, “the existence of God,” gives away the game, as though God is one existent among other existents, one entity among other entities, one actor among other actors, whose actions must conform to standards that we have determined in advance are appropriate to being God. The transcendent, the ineffable, the totally other, the God who acts in history was tamed and domesticated in order to meet the scientist’s and philosopher’s job descriptions for the post of God. And if God didn’t meet the terms of references, then so much the worse for God...

“Hail, O Reproof of foolish philosophers!” (Akathist Hymn to the Blessed Virgin Mary, hat tip to Summa Contra Mundum)

Pope Pius X: Deum… naturali rationis lumine per ea quae facta sunt, hoc est per visibilia creationis opera, tanquam causam per effectus certo cognosci adeoque demostrari etiam posse, profiteor. (I declare that by the natural light of reason, God can be certainly known and therefore His existence demonstrated through the things that are made, i.e., through the visible works of creation, as the cause is known through its effects.)

The Magisterium said it. I believe it. That settles it.

I have written. It IS compelling. Therefore, I have ALWAYS been write... err, right!

Now, where was I...? Oh, yes, contemplating my navel...

Anon,

Of course Thomas answered this ages ago by positing act and potency etc.

If you reference my many writings elsewhere regarding these issues you will see that your argument is flawed.

Thanks Sal for believing that God exists. In the world lots of peoples are disagreeing that God never exists. But I would like to take this post as a first step of awareness. I'll share this post with others.
